Calculating the duration between two dates is one of the most common tasks in project planning, finance, travel scheduling, and legal contracts. While it seems straightforward, subtleties like leap years, time zone offsets, and inclusive counting can introduce subtle errors if done improperly.
The Basic Calendar Method
To count days manually between two dates in the same month, simply subtract the earlier day number from the later day number. For dates across different months, add the remaining days in the start month to the days elapsed in the end month, plus the total days of any intervening complete months.
Inclusive vs. Exclusive Counting
Exclusive counting measures the elapsed span (such that start date to start date is 0 days). Inclusive counting counts both the starting day and ending day as active calendar days (such that start date to start date is 1 day). Always verify your contract or policy requirements to choose the correct approach.
Why Time Zones and DST Cause Software Errors
A classic software bug occurs when dates are converted to timestamps and divided by 86,400,000 milliseconds. Daylight saving transitions (where days are 23 or 25 hours long) can cause this calculation to produce fractional days like 41.96 or 42.04. Pure date-only calendar arithmetic resolves this completely.
